2008 The Ups, Downs, Ins & Outs!

In spite of recent worldwide financial and economic turmoil, Automobili Lamborghini has delivered another very strong year of sales during 2008. The Italian luxury sports car manufacturer increased unit sales to 2,430 units. This means a growth of 1% despite a decrease of 20% in the US. The strongest growth rates were achieved in the Middle Eastern and Far Eastern Asian markets.

Mercedes-AMG is also celebrating the most successful year in its company history, AMG, the performance brand within Mercedes-Benz, succeeded in increasing vehicle sales worldwide by 19% selling 24,200 vehicles. Both these luxury marques bucked the overall market trend in extremely difficult conditions during the second half of 2008.

By contrast General Motors sold 8.35 million vehicles in 2008 (down 11%), thus becoming the world’s second largest vehicle manufacturer, following 77 consecutive years as the world’s largest maker of motor vehicles. First place now belongs to Toyota, the Japanese manufacturer sold 8.97 million (down 4%).

However Suzuki Motor Corporation achieved record global car production figures in 2008 with a total production of more than 2.63 million vehicles.
